Car Bashing and the Maintenance Man

I had only begun my drift when I walked into a situation I was hopeful could produce some great sounds. There was a man working on a minivan parked between Merrill Hall and the Heating Plant. The Heating Plant is always releasing interesting, droning, ambiance and the man working on the car created loud and violent foreground noises. Anyways I decided to take a seat next to a pile of weathered cigarette butts collected by the curb. I allowed the local spiders and ladybugs to crawl on me while I sat motionless. An interesting landscape of sounds unfolds when a maintenance worker begins hauling bags of garbage out of Merrill Hall. Listen to it here.

Downright Raucous

My algorithmic walk had taken me to a quiet residential area. It did not stay that way for long however. Turning onto Shepard my microphone picked up a series of high pitched shrills coming from the streets well kept backyards. I inched down the sidewalk trying to pinpoint the location of this noise. As a neared one of the driveways a red Radio Flyer wagon being pulled by a young boy and carrying two more of the same age zipped out into the street. Another young boy quickly flowed into the street on a skateboard. Somewhat shocked and thrilled at the same time I watched these boys laugh, yell, taunt, sing, and create a downright raucous in the middle of the road. You can hear their excitement on Shepard Street here.

The Lawn-Harmonic Symphony

Newport Court must be the promised land for professional lawn care businesses. As I entered the court I was welcomed by three large riding lawnmowers, two weed whackers, and a push mower. I don't think any of them resided on Newport Court. All of this whirling machinery echoed in and around the court. Luckily I had my trusty microphone at my side. Take a listen.

The Beetle is Silenced

As deftly loud as Newport Court was I was astonished to hear something other than the grinding of gigantic spinning blades. While I was beginning to leave the court a trill of clicks emerged, though dwarfed in volume by the machines. It seemed to be resonating from the tree above me so I quickly raised my microphone to capture it's last trills before becoming completely engulfed by the lawn mowers. Listen while the beetle is silenced.

Moped

I happened to have my microphone recording (just in case) while I was walking slowly down Newton Avenue. I glanced behind me and saw a man getting on a moped so I decided to turn around and see if I could catch something interesting. The sound the little bike made was amazing! The muffler sputtered a very bold sound which I have for you, right here! Won't you take a listen?

Drift Strategy

For my drift strategy I am going to attempt combining a timed and algorithmic walk. Every 5 minutes I will change my direction. That direction will depend on the algorithmic zig zag, or left, right. This will be interesting to test out as I'm not sure how fast I'm going to be walking. Cross your fingers...
